:: Halloween Decor, La Paz, Baby Love, Football & A Field Trip ::

Some days are just harder than others and I woke up this morning sad.  The lack of sleep seems to catch up with me about once a week and I am too tired to NOT be sad.  And I think subconsciously the change of the weather and turning of the leaves, although beautiful and welcomed, reminds me of our enormous loss and the fact that the 2 year anniversary is just a month away.  But I went about the day and started to perk up, enjoying time with my family.  Then as we were riding to lunch I just got a feeling that I needed to read my Jesus Calling devotion today and within the body of that devotion was this sentence..."Instead of regretting or resenting the way things are, thank me in all circumstances.  Trust me and don't be fearful; thank Me and rest in My sovereignty."  I needed to read that today and I thought one of you might, too.

Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:18

And let's be honest, even on our rough days, it's pretty easy for us to be thankful when we look into Knox's precious face.

He is such a sweet baby.  His disposition so similar to Livy.  Content and happy most of the time, laughing and grinning, discovering his hands, tongue, and voice.  Sometimes it's so apparent that he is trying to talk back to you with his little noises and coos.
It's hard to believe that on the 8th he'll be 2 months old already!  He has changed so much.  My favorite addition being those fat rolls on his thighs I love to squeeze.  It seems like overnight he grew these long, beautiful eyelashes.  (As a side note, why does it always seem like the boys get these gorgeous eyelashes they care nothing about while most of us girls do without?)

Here Knox is relaxing at one of Parrish's flag football games with CC.  I told you he was easy going.  The touchdown pose says it all.
Parrish is playing on the cardinals Upward team with some neighborhood and church friends and to my surprise he absolutely LOVES it.  I really thought it would be a little too "close for comfort" for him because he didn't seem to like getting in the fray playing soccer last year, but he has come out strong going after those flags with more gusto with each passing game.
Today we were so proud of him pulling his first flag.  He was pretty excited too, although the most fun of flag football to him may be the fact that he gets to wear eye black.  :)

On October 1st we busted out the boys glow in the dark skeleton pj's.  My sister  Caroline mailed Knox  his so he could match his big brother.  Parrish had a lot of fun that night watching himself glow under the covers.
I pinned a cute Martha Stewart idea for decorating your front porch with hanging bats on Pinterest a while ago and we decided to do ours this weekend.  You can find the template here.  We just traced and cut ours from black poster board.
You can't see it in this picture but Parrish was particularly creative and decided to add red electrical tape to a few of their wings so it would look like they (in his word) "blooded."  So funny.
Inside we added some crows and moss to our dining table candelabra.
Outside we decorated the handle of our broom with alternating orange and black duct tape and added another crow.  Our cats have been very interested in these fake birds.  Thankfully after checking them out thoroughly they must have decided they were not real and as of yet, have not attacked them.

The rustic pumpkin is the latest in our Olivia Charles Antiques line and can be purchased at our booth at the Mt Laurel Fall Festival THIS Saturday, October 13th!  We'll have some on stakes for your planters and some to hang on your front doors or fences.  These are so precious and will take you all the way through Thanksgiving!  The festival is going to be a lot of fun...complete with a petting zoo for the kids!

And since we've been on a decorating role this week, Parrish decorated this milk jug with a frankenstein face and we lit it with orange "spooky" lights to put on our front step.  With Parrish in Kindergarten now I've been missing our art projects at home together.  Halloween has given us a good excuse to get creative together again!

It's been a pretty eventful few weeks at our house and one of the main events was finding this little baby squirrel on our front walk.  He had fallen out of his nest and I literally tripped over him one morning. It was too sad to just leave him there so I called my sweet and eternally patient husband and asked him to come home and help me try to save him.  After a few calls to a wildlife expert Cannon fixed him up a box with an old t-shirt and heated rice sock for warmth and placed it off the ground in the tree where the nest was hoping the mom would come and get him.  When that didn't happen and it started getting dark we took him to a volunteer at a local animal clinic who took him home to feed him and care for him until he could be released.  Can you believe we went to all that trouble for a squirrel?  But just look at that sweet face with his eyes not even open!  We didn't have the heart to just leave him there and of course Parrish thought it was all super cool.  He even took his picture into class for show and tell the next day and named him "Spiney."  Never mind that we were busy trying to open a new restaurant that week.

Despite the squirrel drama Cannon and partners still opened a new Hoover location of La Paz last Thursday and it couldn't have gone better.  I helped with the remodel and redesign of the building and am so pleased with how it turned out.  It's like it was meant to be a Mexican restaurant all along.  We installed a giant chalkboard wall for the kids to play, hung custom iron chili pepper chandeliers, replaced a Bham city scene with a La Paz, Mexico scene on the light board, framed gorgeous antique indian prints in Olivia Charles frames, changed all the lighting and added a fun, new deck onto the front of the building with happy red umbrellas, galvanized trough planters, and cafe lights.  It is a happy place with delicious food, so check it out the next time you're near the Galleria.  It's located in the old Michael's Steaks and Seafood building next to J.Alexander's on Galleria Circle.  Congrats to my sweet Cannon on a job well done!

Also last week I chaperoned Parrish's class on their 1st field trip.  We went to the Birmingham Zoo and he was very excited to ride the school bus with his friends.

After lunch that day it was so cute to see them all gather around in a circle for an impromptu game of "rock, paper, scissors, shoot."  (We never said "shoot" after "rock, paper, scissors" when I was growing up, but apparently things have changed.)
While we were there Parrish fed the birds and I had a few actually land on my head.  I was just praying they didn't use the bathroom while they were there!
This is Parrish's whole class.  Little frogs from Mrs. Henke's pad.  So precious.
Parrish loves to play with these sweet friends, Mia and Jill.
And with his best little buddy Cole.  I hear all about these sweet new friends when he gets home from school each day and it warms my heart to hear how much he loves them and is enjoying school.  It took a little while, but he is really getting into the groove now.
Another shot with his feathered friend...
And every other Sunday it seems we can count on a call from the Great-grands Glorio and E saying they are on their way to see the boys.
They can't go very long without having Knox in their arms, and I can't say I blame them.  They'll drive up and stay for 2 or 3 hours all the way from Andalusia and then turn around and go right back home.  If that's not love I don't know what is!  :)

And speaking of my new little love...he is waking up from his nap and needing his mama...

:: Life the last 6 weeks... ::

Life over the last 6 weeks has mainly been consumed with this sweet little face...

But in between the diaper changes, feedings, soothings, Kindergarten work and my 5-year-old's activity schedule we've also squeezed in some time for a few other things, like a special family dinner to celebrate my 33rd (yikes!) birthday.
My "boys" made me a yummy lemon cake and a precious "Mommy" banner (and yes, with all those candles it seemed like we might set the house on fire - and the sad thing is, it wasn't even all 33!)

Parrish starts deciding what he is going to be for Halloween in August (I guess I can thank the big retailers who think it's a good idea to put holiday stuff out over the summer for that!) and has been talking about being "GI JOE Snake Eyes Black Ninja" (whew - a mouth full!) for a month.  I tried in vain to get him to be something like batman that would be easy to coordinate with his baby brother (wouldn't Knox make a cute bat?!)  No, he said...Knox can be a ninja like him.  Well, let's just say that there is not exactly a cute infant ninja costume.  So instead I saw this baby sushi costume DIY tutorial on marthastewart.com and decided that would be a precious combo.  CC came up with the idea to let the boys hand out fortune cookies, too.  Adorable!
So I followed the easy steps and came up with this costume for baby Knox.  Don't you think he'll make a cute baby shrimp nigiri?

Our photographer Alisha Baker also gave us a cd of beautiful images she's taken of my family over the course of my pregnancy and Knox's birth and I wanted to share them here.  I love all of them and appreciate her capturing these special moments in such a beautiful way!  I want to add 3 new canvases to our family canvas gallery on my stair landing and try as I might I cannot narrow it down to 3.  Any votes??  Please help me decide!

Although these pictures paint a story that can only be seen as idyllic, and these moments ARE just that, in the interest of being completely honest and painting a picture of our TRUE lives and not just the life that we want others to see on this blog, I will tell you that mixed with the complete joy has also at times been a sense of a disconnection from God.  When you are sleep deprived everything in life seems just a little bit harder.  The crosses you carry seem a lot heavier.  The "why's" and longing for Knox's big sister Olivia weigh us down more.  Not a day goes by that I don't imagine what their interaction would be.  I imagine her joy and curiosity at her little brother.  Some of Parrish's new Kindergarten friends have sisters that are exactly the age Olivia would be.  When we meet them at the park to play I think how perfect it would have been to have her there to play with them and the wounds re-open.

I went on a run over the weekend and this song by Heather Williams played from my playlist:

Wish I knew what I'm supposed to say to you
What you're going through
But I don't know what you're feeling
Does anyone know what you're feeling right now

You're afraid
The future's like an enemy,
and you just wish you could see
'Cause you don't know where you're going
Don't let it keep you from hoping right now

Yeah we've all been lost and we've all been hurt
Where our hope is spent and our faith don't work
But nothing lasts forever
The only thing that matters
Is God is still God and He holds it together

So hang on now

He's been there, walking in the wilderness
When it's hard to see the end
But He had the strength to do it, so He can help you through it
So hang on now

So even when you lie awake
And bend until you almost break
The darkest time is right before the dawn

This is often how I feel.  I know no one can know how I feel or even what to say, I know our problem is not of the "fixable" variety.  I long to know God's plan for my life and our family's future.  And this song reminds me that even when I don't have the answers and I feel disconnected from him, to hang on, because God is still there, waiting for me to wake up from my sleep-deprived fog and reach out to Him for clarity.  My sweet sister Caroline painted me a beautiful watercolor painting for my birthday entitled "clarity of the mind."  Appropriate, don't you think?

My favorite line in the song is that the darkest time is right before the dawn.  Isn't that true?  Our darkest time was before our sweet Knox was born and his birth was our dawn.  He has filled part of the vast void that was left in our family when we lost Olivia.  We still have moments of darkness intertwined with our happiness, but we are hopeful.

I ran across this quote the other day when I was reading and it's truth resonated with me:

“We don’t look at problems. Whatever you look at becomes bigger.
We look at God.” – Pastor Spinoza

When we stew on our problems they do become bigger.  When we look at them and not at God, that is when the darkness sets in.  So we stay busy and try not to do that.  We don't always succeed, but we are trying!

One of the ways we stay busy is working, and because of this I am so thankful to Shelby Living Magazine for featuring our Olivia Charles Antiques and Foundation on the cover of their October issue.  This exposure has been wonderful because it has had the double effect of increasing our business and raising awareness about our foundation and it's mission.  You can read the full story here.

Thanks to this exposure we are working on helping to provide burial assistance for our first family, and it is this family that I want to ask you to pray for.  You can visit their Facebook group at Prayers for Ryan.  Little Ryan has been battling brain cancer that has recently returned and there are no more treatment options available to him.  His family is working with many others to fulfill many of his dreams over these last weeks and and also asking for donations to help them with burial assistance when/if he does go home to be with Jesus soon.  I know what it is like to loose a child, but I have no idea what it is like to anticipate the death of a child on a daily basis, living with that looming over your head, so please pray for Ryan and his parents Jasmine and Greg.  On their Facebook page they are asking for people to mail him cards of encouragement, etc and if you feel led to do that I'm sure it would be appreciated.

And one last prayer request is for a family from Montgomery whose son Preston was found in a pool and rushed to Children's in Birmingham to be put into a medically induced coma.  I do not know this family personally, but they are friends of our friends, so I have been following their FB page "Prayers for Preston" and praying for their specifics needs and would ask you to do the same.  From what I understand they are in the process of bringing him out of the coma to assess his condition and this seems to be a long and tedious process which is very stressful for the family.  Please pray for their hearts and minds, the doctors, and God's perfect peace to settle on his parents during this nerve-wracking time.  We are working to get them a prayer pager and will provide that number once it is assigned.

Thank you for lifting these families up!!

:: My How Life Can Change Quickly! ::

The past two weeks have been filled with joy and filled with change.  We have celebrated the birth of our precious baby boy Knox and adjusted to the emotions, sleeplessness, joy and challenges his entrance into this world brought with it.  We have also sent our oldest son Parrish off to "big school."

As I sit here typing this post on day 2 of Kindergarten I still get weepy thinking of my sweet boy getting off the school bus yesterday afternoon or hopping out of the car in the morning and walking into school and his classroom all by himself.  I keep thinking...is he really old enough to be doing this??  Walking him in on his first day yesterday he was so happy and calm.  He marched into Mrs. Henke's classroom without a look back, got out his lunch box and snack bag and put them on the shelf and then sat down at his seat.  My heart swelled with pride and I had a sense of peace that this is where he is supposed to be.  No tears and no fussing from the boy that a few weeks ago was adamant that he was not happy about going to school - now that is an answer to prayer!  I think visiting his classroom and meeting his teacher (who we love) last week really helped to dispel his fears.

Of course I was a different story!  I was shocked that I didn't cry when I dropped him off at school for the first time, but when I walked back into the house a few minutes later I burst into tears looking at the signs of him all over the house but without him to fill it.  Knox and I managed to make it through the day, which was made easier by his sweet presence and a few visits with friends and that afternoon as we met the school bus I couldn't believe how much energy Parrish still had after school.  He bounded off the bus and we celebrated with ice cream at Jimbos and then played at the park with friends and he was still going strong enough to play with daddy in the alley after dinner last night.  Needless to say he was tired this morning and not so sure about this having to go to school every day thing!  (To be fair, I'm not so sure about it either!)  :)

Baby Knox has been a complete and total joy and I really don't think I could have sent Parrish off to Kindergarten if he was not here.  He is the hungriest baby we have ever had!  I can nurse him for 45 minutes and he's still hungry!  Last night was our best night of sleep yet....he went 4 hours between 2 feedings and 3 hours between one (which is probably why I have the energy to blog this morning!).  During the day he may eat every two hours though, so we are still just figuring it all out and trying to get into a more scheduled routine.  The good thing about Parrish being in school is that Knox and I have lots of quality, guilt-free, bonding time in the rocker and at home to ease into our routine together and I am just soaking in every minute with him, realizing that this time is precious, sometimes difficult, but always brief.  I find myself wanting to just bottle his baby smell to keep forever.  There are a million things to be done around the house, but holding him and snuggling always seem to take first priority.  :)  And thankfully that's ok because my awesome mother-in-law CC has been such an amazing help ..... she brings dinner on the nights a friend isn't bringing it, comes almost every day to freshen up my house or to grab our laundry to do at her house.  She is the epitome of "service with a smile" and we are so very thankful!!

As far as who Knox looks like...at first we didn't think he looked like Parrish or Olivia (as Parrish said, he just looks like Knox!).  But as we've pulled out old baby pictures we've decided that he does look like Parrish just without the thick, dark hair sticking up in every direction!  Compared to Parrish and Olivia, Knox is our "bald" baby!  :)  He has some features that remind me of Olivia...his nose and his coloring are more like hers to me.  I wonder what his slate blue eyes will become...true blue like Parrish or sea glass green like Livy or his own special shade of blue??

Parrish is settling into his big brother role again with ease.  He is Knox's guardian...always asking if he's awake, if he can hold him or kiss him, how he's doing, if he can help change his diaper, give him a baby massage, etc.  He is so proud to introduce him to his friends and refers to him as "my baby."  This morning he informed Cannon that staying home to help take care of baby Knox would be more fun than school.  :)  I am so blessed to have two precious boys who I pray will remain close as they grow up together.

Of course this time has also brought to the surface fears and worry about Knox's safety and the possibility of it happening all over again, but my mother-in-law shared a verse with us that we have since been reminding ourselves of often:

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7

We are resting and trusting in God and his plan for Knox and Parrish and our family.  We are determined not to let our sadness overshadow our sheer joy of having been given this new little life to care for.  Yes, our joy often commingles with our sadness and longing for Olivia as there are many reminders of our Livy at this age, but God is faithful to give us grace to make it through whatever sad times we face and we are blessed that he has entrusted us with this new little life.

Every night as I lay Knox down to sleep I repeat this verse:

I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8

Here are some pictures from the past two weeks, which can probably tell the story of our life over the last days better than I can with words...

A HUGE thank you to our friend Terri who came to the hospital to capture the first moments of Knox's life in pictures.  It was an incredible gift to be able to just take in every moment without having to scramble for the camera....thank you, my friend...for sharing those special moments with us!

:: Have a little help from my friends.... ::

Lately I have been struck by just how talented so many of my friends are.  Each in their own way.  As I've prepared for Knox's arrival, I have been the recipient of many of their talents and just had to take a minute to brag on them.  First off is photographer Alisha Baker of Alisha Baker Photography.  I met her for the first time not too long ago at a Blessed Be The Name photo shoot and was so impressed with her Be(tween) catalog photos I asked her if she'd take Knox's newborn pictures.

A few weeks ago she emailed and said she had an idea for a maternity photo shoot for her portfolio and would I be interested in "modeling" (I use that term VERY lightly!).  I said yes, please!  And these images are just a few from our session.

She totally dreamed up the wish lantern idea and made them all by hand.  It was absolutely hilarious to watch us try to corral the lanterns from blowing away too fast and even more of a sight to see Cannon and Parrish on the bass cat boat going to gather them from the middle of the lake after we were done!  Parrish definitely loved the adventure and by the end of it, Cannon was already coming up with ways we could get them to stay put longer next time.  It was so much fun and Alisha is such a talented photographer.  I am so thankful I will have these images to look back on.  When I look at the pink sky I think of Livy smiling down on us...me carrying the baby boy she helped Jesus select just for our family.

Another Über talented friend is Brantley Bowden of Southern Stationery.  I've known Brantley since Auburn and at my baby shower my friend Autumn gave me some of her absolutely precious (seriously - I couldn't stop looking at them) stationery, stickers, and gift tags.
I loved everything so much I contacted Brantley about doing Knox's announcements, and then I got a little carried away (shocker!) and had her do some cigar wraps for hospital favors too (I wrapped them around the blue bubble gum cigars and they are so precious).

And some baby bag tags for Knox...

And not to be left out...some new luggage and backpack tags for Mr. Parrish.

So many talented friends....I love being the beneficiary of their God-given gifts!  Thanks, ladies!!
